Testing Challenge: Break the glass

February 7th, 2012 3 comments

click for a bigger QR codeA friend of mine told me about a virtual Beer app at the weekend and of course I immediately downloaded it and started playing with it.

Whilst playing with it, I accidentally broke the glass. The Tester in me immediately wanted to investigate and break it again. I kept playing with it on Saturday and finally figured out how to reproduce it.

My challenge to you is to learn and explore the application and to find a way to break the screen. Once you’ve managed to reproduce it, post the steps in the comments below. You can download the application by scanning the QR code.

Just to prove to you that I’m not lying…

What Testers can learn from the Vulcan Death Grip

June 3rd, 2011 2 comments

One of the ways I like to apply my knowledge of Software Testing is to draw parallels with real life situations and to combine my knowledge of Testing with my knowledge of TV shows. I’m a massive Star Trek fan, and I’ve written a number of blog posts in the past about TV Shows I’ve watched, such as The Twilight Zone and a programme about Crash Test Dummies, and managed to draw parallels with Software Testing. One thing I’ve been mystified with since first seeing it nearly 20 years ago is the Vulcan Death Grip. Read more…

Crash Test Dummies – Using realistic Test data

March 25th, 2011 10 comments

I was watching a programme about Crash Test Dummies yesterday. I’m on Holiday this week so I’ve been watching a lot of rubbish TV for the past week, so I thought that this was just another random programme that would keep me occupied for half an hour or so.

It didn’t click with me that this was a form of “Testing” until right at the very end of the programme until I the narrator said the following: Read more…

Play. Laugh. Grow.

March 18th, 2011 1 comment

I’d like to share with you a personal philosophy that I try and apply to my work life… It just so happens to be the motto for a well known toy company…

I first saw this in a toy shop shortly after my Niece was born last year and, in between playing with the Ben10 action figures, couldn’t help but think what a great motto this is. It may seem like a childish philosophy to have, but if you break it down in to its respective parts, it makes a lot of sense. Read more…

Usability Testing with my Mortgage Adviser?

February 4th, 2011 2 comments

I had a meeting with a Mortgage adviser last Saturday. I’m hoping to get my first house this year but I had absolutely no idea where to start, so this seemed like the logical place to start. It was quite an interesting meeting and I’ll admit that I was a little nervous beforehand. I assumed it would just be a meeting where they would spout a load of figures and percentages at me and I would just smile and nod politely back at them. Read more…

First Week Night Testing Session

January 28th, 2011 3 comments

This week I joined in on the Week Night Testing sessions for the first time. I was a bit apprehensive at first as I had never done anything like this before and didn’t quite know what to expect. I was expecting someone to have thrown together an application or a mock up of a screen and to “just test it”, but it was actually much more thought provoking than that. Read more…

Group Testing – Getting the right people for the job

January 14th, 2011 1 comment

I finally got my grubby little hands on a build of my application this week.

It’s hard to describe the application I’m Testing exactly, but the application acts like a launch pad for other applications. You log in via this application and from there you can access other applications. The change is to where it authenticates from when you log in so it’s quite a little change, but the user details are used throughout the system and it affects quite a few applications. Read more…
